As a website owner, you would want to analyze the progress of your website in terms of who is visiting it and how many times. This information would help you improve your website. However, to fetch this information, you would need a web analytics tool. Although, you could find all such information the log file; it can be a tedious task to read through a log file that has so many records in it. A web analytics tool serves as an ideal utility to explain you the traffic flow of your website with simple and sorted data. Web analytics is a useful exercise and you must know how to use it. Following is the description of the same.

To start with, you must collect the data. If you have a web analytics tool installed, it may already be doing the stuff for you. You need to include all aspects of your website that collect data. Such aspects include CGI logs, Web logs, forms, and other kinds of data that your website generates.

The next step would be to transform the collected data into an understandable format that can be manipulated further. Reviewing the log file manually could be a hectic task. A web analytics tool would serve well here, making it easy to convert the collected data into understandable data. However, if some of your data is in the non-web log format like CGI, you will need to covert it yourself.

Now that you have all the data available to you, in an easy to understand format; you need to start your analysis. This should be the most interesting part of your web analytics task. What you should be looking for is the trend in your web traffic. Following are some of the points to figure out the trend:

Do more visitors visit your site at a specific time? Which of your pages are the most commonly visited ones? How many pages does a visitor visit on an average? For how long does a visitor stay in the site? How much traffic do you get from the search engines? What are the exit pages of your website? Who has linked to your website?

After having done the data collection, and transformation of the same into reports, it is time to set new goals. Now that you know what your good and points are; you can build up on the good points and improve on the weak points. You may wish to add business links to your most visited pages, and promote the lesser visited pages. The idea should be to bank on your strengths to achieve more, and lift up your weakness to convert them into strengths.

Your potential visitors need to know what updates you have made to your website. Unless they are aware of the updates, your hard work would go in vain. This certainly calls for the promotion of your website, highlighting the newly made updates, to attract the visitors.

You must repeat the above process time and again. This is in fact, a continual process that you must do.

Basic Website SEO Is Easy

SEO or Search engine optimisation can seem like a difficult and technical area when starting your web marketing journey. Using the services of an SEO expert can be expensive but to be honest you can save yourself a ton of cash by doing a few basic things.

SEO is a vast topic and you will take a long time to be an expert but by following this guide you can optimise your site effectively and improve your traffic figures greatly.

Put simply SEO is the process of making your pages more focused, so the search engines are clearer what your page is about. There is nothing sinister about this technique, in fact it is fully approved by search engines as long as you don’t take it too far by trying to spam them with ‘black hat’ techniques or irrelevant content.

Backlinks From Other Sites

Search engines love links, it’s the backbone of the internet. The more links back to your pages the better as long as they are relevant to your content.

i.e. your site is about web design so links from sites about seo, photoshop and css are perfect. More general stuff is great too e.g. business, marketing and computers. Links from a site about motorbikes is not relevant so less useful as it makes your page topic unclear.

The actual ‘anchor text’ used by the linking page is also important. When you create great content that people want to link to, they will use text like ‘I found this great article about [website seo]‘ (where [ ] is the part they put the link) so search engines use this anchor text as a description of what the page is about. Links that have anchor text relating to your content are the best way to build your ranking.

Note – If you have contacts on other sites you can ask them to link to your page, just make sure they use different anchor text so it appears more natural.

Using Keywords

Writing valuable, informative articles is the cornerstone of any great site but with a few small tweaks you can make your writing much more effective. Before starting a new article take some time to research what keywords people are searching for (the google keyword tool is great for this) and base your content around this.

The keywords should be placed at regular intervals throughout the body of your article to 5-10% density (if you can without making it unreadable). It should also be placed once in the heading of the article. Don’t go crazy here though, the article still needs to read well, users will just click away if it does’t interest them and search engines don’t like keyword stuffing either.

Alternatively articles you create can be submitted to article directory sites where you can choose which anchor text is used in the links to your site.

Relevant Domain, Meta Tags and URL

To add to the overall website SEO using a domain related to your topic is important. So if your site is about indian monkeys www.indianmonkeys.com is perfect as it contains your chosen keywords. You can add the keywords in the URL i.e. the filename of your page. If your page is about ‘brown indian tree monkeys’ a page named brown-indian-tree-monkeys.html is great as the full url would then be www.indianmonkeys.com/brown-indian-tree-monkeys.html. It needs to be relevant but don’t overdo the keywords and categorise the site clearly for easy navigation.

Meta tags reside in the HTML code of your page. They are less important these days but you should still place your keywords in the title, keywords and description tags, making sure it is human friendly to read.

Basic website SEO is easy, if you do just these three things you will see great results in your traffic and conversions.

If you want to host any type of video for a website then you should, but you should also do your best to keep it off the main server. Putting it onto your main server will cause serious problems, like causing many people to have to wait for the video AND the website itself to load. If you can stream your video from alternative servers then you will find that it’s a lot easier to load the other content. The only problem with this is that you need to constantly make sure that the links to the streaming video are all functioning properly.

If you are finding that you are receiving more traffic that you had thought then you should also go ahead and distribute your content out amongst various servers. In this you can be sure that content is streamed by the server that has the least load meaning that users will get their page up as quickly as possible.

Physical downloads such as games, music, or other software must be allocated to different servers. Some servers can be designated as ‘premium’ servers and people who pay a monthly fee can be given access to increased speeds and additional content.

The next thing that you can do is what is known as keyword optimization, or SEO. This is the act of placing specific keywords in your meta tags, alt tags or even your page itself that people will search for.

If you know what you’re doing then setting up a web page will never be hard. The only hard part is making it useable and efficient but there are a lot of materials out there to give you a helping hand so you’ll never be alone in your never ending quest for optimization.
