Promoting affiliate programs and online marketing is an exciting way for the marketing newbie to make riches online. Its a fast, easy, and cheap business that almost anyone can start from home. This does lead to many newcomer’s dreams of fast cars and big houses broken after the first week. Now while you can get to those goals. It does take work and some knowledge of the common newbie mistakes.
Common Mistake – Signing up for every affiliate program. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is easy to jump in head first and try out every program without focus. The worst thing to do is put up one website, promoting 100 different products, none of them related. This just looks bad, doesn’t convert sales, and is not going to make you a dime. A good idea would be to create a new and different page for each product your are promoting.
Mistake To Avoid – Since you like the product so will others. Now it definitely helps to have an interest in what your are selling. If you don’t you can get bored quickly and not have any passion for what you’re doing. But there must be a market for it. If you like some crazy, unique product, because that’s who you are, great! But if your the only one who likes it, because that’s who you are, then no sales! Your first product niche should have some competition. That way you know there is already a buying base. This leads to sales. Start working on stuff that others already are making money on. Then with experience jump into those unique niches and drum up some traffic.
Mistake To Avoid – Losing focus on your current promotion It is easy to jump from best, new, campaign to the next best new campaign and then complain that nothing is making you money. Stay focused. Work on one campaign until you get it profitable before you move on to the next. Test and track each project and tweak it until it turns into a winner. Don’t lose sight and start a new project leaving the other one to sit in the back. Focus on one and get it rolling before you try something new.
Common Mistake – Staying too long on a campaign. Its the flip side “Working on too many campaigns” if you determine that you are not making any money and in fact losing money, it may be time to jump. Move on. Don’t waste too much time, energy, and effort into a losing battle. Now give each campaign a fair chance. Test, track, and tweak. But if it’s just not working it maybe time to find a new promotion.
Mistake To Avoid – Not riding winds of change. I know it stinks to spend hours or day on a site and still no sales. Traffic is flowing, people are checking the site out but no one is buying. All that hard work for not. Well now’s not the time for complacency. It’s time for more hard work. It’s tough but if it’s not converting it’s time to spend more hours and days fixing your site. New content, layout, whatever. Change it, test it, change it again until you find something that works. Then change it again and find something better!
I hope some of this information can help you on your road to success in affiliate marketing. The key is to keep trying and testing. Don’t give up! If your not one of the very few who makes money the first try, don’t worry. It takes time, testing, experience, and effort to start seeing even a few bucks. No matter what the guru’s say you will not make 30k in a week your first time out. You need patience and plenty of trial and error. Then repeat what works!
