WordPress 3.0 Makes Building Business Websites Even Easier

webinar 062820101 WordPress 3.0 Makes Building Business Websites Even Easier

Building business websites with WordPress just keeps getting easier and easier. What I mean by that is that having an awesome website that looks great and has lots of useful features is available to anyone. I mean anyone.

If you’re a business owner who’s looking to provide information to your existing customers, or you want to use your website to attract new business, then setting up a website using WordPress is your ticket. We like to say that if you can run a word processor, you can run your own website using WordPress.

Back in the old days (you know, 10+ Internet dog years ago) you had to create a design, build your webpage template in html, copy and paste the template to create enough pages for your website, stitch those pages together with navigation links, upload them to a web server, and then pray that something didn’t break in the process.

Updates were painful, time consuming, required special tools and knowledge, and took a while to untangle when something went wrong with one of your pages. That meant that most website owners couldn’t or wouldn’t update their sites very often.

But by using WordPress, all the parts and pieces of the puzzle are built in. If you can run a word processor, you can run your own website. All you have to do is log into the admin area of your website, and click “Add Page” to add a new page. All your website images can be uploaded directly using point and click options. Your website theme holds all your navigational menu items, defines where your website information shows up, and makes it extremely simple to manage.

At Open Source Marketer we believe that WordPress is the simplest, most flexible solution, that offers you long term possibilities for growth at a lower cost than anything else. That’s why this Monday we’ll be hosting a webinar on building business websites using WordPress.

During the one hour webinar we’ll be sharing the process we use to create sites for ourselves and clients. We’ll be sharing some examples of sites that we’ve built for clients, including informational sites, membership sites, and micro-sites.

You are invited to join us and ask questions about the process we use or even WordPress in general. We enjoy discussing the merits of the platform and we’d love to help you understand what it takes to build a business website using WordPress.

So register now to join us and bring your questions.

WordPress 3.0 Makes Building Business Websites Even Easier

It can’t be that Simple

Its Not That Simple It can’t be that Simple

When I heard someone tell me they just wanted a “simple” website (you know, like JCPenny or Amazon), my gut used to start twisting and I got the distinct feeling that Sepuku was less painful.

The thing I ended up learning, was that building a business website CAN be simple, if you always remain creative, flexible and open to new ideas.

The website for your business has a goal. There are things you want to achieve by having that site. If you keep that goal in the forefront of your mind when building your site, you will discover that it indeed is simple. The moment you decide that a specific bit of minutia (the sidebar needs to be 3 pixels to the left) is more important that your goal, your website is no longer simple.

WordPress makes achieving your business goals online even simpler. The manual coding and changing of information is no longer in the realm of just programmers. Anyone in your company can now build and maintain your website. The limits of what can be done easily and quickly have been shattered and moved farther away than anyone expected.

You don’t have to wait for the right time-frame or resources to achieve your online goals. The ability is now inherent in the system and is ready for anyone to use.

Custom applications for the web will always be new territory. They will always require a great deal of resources and time. Not every website requires the level of resources that JCPenny’s expended when building their website. You can build an online store, without having to spend the time or money that Amazon did.

You shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel.

There are solutions that have already made having the features you want on your website simple and easy. They are getting even better every day. Being the first one on the block with a new toy is really expensive. Being the second on the block with a similar toy, means you get to knock the first guy on his butt because you have the same thing and spent waaaaaay less than he did to get it.

Being a programmer, I’ve had to rearrange my thinking about websites, because now when someone asks me for a “simple” website, I say, “oh, you mean like Ebay”.

How do I start a website and have it rank high on Google?

Someone who has a great idea or is starting a business, but doesn’t know how to build a website is in for a whopper of a dilemma. Do I spend time on learning website stuff and Google stuff or do i spend time on my idea / business?

At some point in time you have to ask yourself where is the value. Most businesses want to use the Internet as a way to market (or directly sell) their goods or services. Their business is usually not about the Internet. It’s about something else and the Internet is just another tool for success.

People sometimes stop working on their million dollar idea in order to save a few pennies. I’ve seen several businesses save their way into bankruptcy, when spending a few hundred dollars could have tripled their sales. It always seems to track back to a value proposition. How much time will I spend doing this and what’s the value of spending the time in that way?

If you knew that an expert could get your business up and running on the web in less than a week, would you want to spend 2-3 months figuring out how to get your message into a webpage, or would you rather spend those months focusing on the actual message?

The tools and systems on the web are getting bigger, better, and faster. The small percentage cost difference between “dipping your toe in the water” and truly diving in, is more a matter of your commitment than the money.

To give you  an example, someone recently asked me about building them a website and helping to get ranking on Google. Here was my reply:

I host and build a Content Management System that allows anyone to login from any computer and update/add information with no coding needed on their part. I looked at your competition and I think we can do much better (photogallery, contact form, blog, RSS feed, podcasts, video, and analytics).

Google, on the other hand, is something that takes time and effort on your part to build your website up. At least that’s true if you don’t intend to pay Google $400-$1000 per month to be in the top listing. Your content is the main factor that Google looks at when ranking your site. Your content has to be relevant, highly valuable, and full of the keywords that you want people to be looking for. Then, you get to shift into marketing mode with online articles, podcasts, videocasts, webinars, etc.

The more valuable the your content is, the higher Google will rank you. By creating these articles, podcasts, and videos, and placing them in different places online, you can have them point back to your website. The more content you have pointing back to your site, the higher Google will rank you. The more people who like your content and link to it, the higher Google will rank you.

So, you can either pay Google to get ranking, or you can self-market your site and obtain the same results without the horrible cost. It takes time, effort and a willingness to build up an audience of interested people (this means starting a blog on your site to get your thoughts down and allowing other people to interact with your posts).

Yes, all of these features and more are there with any site I build. Since I build with a system, the number of pages and how they are organized is up to you and how much you want to write.

I am currently building a site for someone with a PR company who is wanting to get into the website side of things. I see her site as being similar to your needs. Here’s what I did for her PR website:

  • Static Pages – Informational pages are always needed on a website. Home, About Us, Contact (the form that people can use to send you their contact information) are part of the basics, but a page could be created to present any part of your business.
  • Home page video – This can be a video you make, or just a collage of photos that express what your business does.
  • Photo gallery – usually linked from home page to show off your work. People love photos, especially good ones that tell a story about your business and how it relates to your customer’s needs.
  • Blog topics – This is a listing of topics on the right side of the site that lets you give good information about topics related to your business. This is also where you will create and place blog posts. The idea is to give out good information that people will want to keep coming back to read (i.e. new posts every few days). People should also be able to comment on those particular posts in order to make the site interactive (you can create the blog separately, but Google REALLY likes blogs, so its a good idea to have the blog as a part of your site).
  • Analytics – This is a way to monitor the traffic on your site and see where people are going and where they are not. It can help you figure out how well your content is doing.

The time frame for getting this done is usually around two weeks. That’s highly dependent upon the design and content, but once the design is finalized and the content is written, then the website can be built much faster. I can also point you in the right direction for building your own podcast and videocast (its not nearly as hard you might think and it is a content type that your competition doesn’t have, so it will make you a cut above them). There are a lot of good articles on Open Source Marketer that can help with your site, so take a look and see if you find some more ideas.

Let me know if I can help in any way,

Christopher

While that was simply an email reply, I always try to stress to people that CONTENT is where they need to focus their efforts. CUSTOMERS want more content. GOOGLE loves content. ANYONE interested in your topic wants to read more about it (or listen to podcasts, or watch video, etc.). When web technology is continually getting cheaper and faster to implement, why, oh why, would you want to focus on a business tool when you REALLY need to focus on what you do best……CONTENT.

What do you think?

Net Business Tips – Focus on This.

As a beginner with an Internet business there are a lot of new techniques to figure out that take a lot of time. It can be overpowering and it unfortunately can lead to some very bad habits. As an at home business it is easy to lose your focus and waste time. If you don’t have focus it is really hard to make money.

If there is one thing you need to ensure the success of your home business it is tolearn how to become an Internet marketer. No one is born with the ability to be an Internet marketer, but anybody can learn how to do it.

There are a lot of tools available on the Internet to create a successful online business and make a lot of money from home. With the videos, ebooks, newsletters, and discussion forums, you can start to become educated in how to market your business.

Too many new business owners try to have a comprehensive understanding of each aspect of the marketing industry and get bogged down. This then leads to inactivity, you sit in front of the computer and read and reread every piece of information that comes into your inbox.

Get the fundamentals and start to promote your business. Spend the majority of your time advertising and marketing your business and generating traffic. The more different forms of traffic you have coming to your website the more sales you will finally make.

An additional strategy is to focus on promoting a landing page and building your email marketing list before passing your prospects through to your website. This does make sense because a list can be an income stream for you in the future by allowing you to follow up with people who subscribe to it.

However, even using this strategy requires that you focus on generating traffic to your landing page. Again the most successful home business owners are those who get a lot of targeted traffic.

As you increase your knowledge and understanding, you can begin to focus on different areas of marketing. But it still comes down to getting people to your website and if you are sitting and reading you are not promoting. If you are not promoting you are not making money. If you are not making money, you are frustrated. If you are frustrated you are going to quit.

Save yourself from giving up on your online business, focus on getting traffic to your site. As you get confidence and put in time you can start to employ different Internet marketing skills, but for now just get yourself out there.
